Irish playwrights have been and are still reshaping their identities through adaptations of Greek tragedies.Taking a feminist perspective, contemporary Irish playwright Marina Carr adapts Euripides'tragedy to open up new possibilities for reshaping Irish identity.By the Bog of Cats..,a modern Irish version of Medea, lays bare the living dilemma of Irish female Other.Ariel, based on the retelling of Iphigenia at Aulis,is meant to release Irish women from patriarchal restraints, and thus deconstructs"Mother Ireland"myth. In her adaptation of Hecuba,Carr adopts the narrative device of polyphony to Create a liminal space for Hecuba to achieve selfredemption. It is argued that Carr's feminist adaptations of Euripides'tragedy serve as hybrid texts to highlight intertextuality and palimpsestuousness of the process of adaptation. Her practice of adaptation justifies the role that adaptation plays in reshaping Irish identity, redefines the concept of adaptation, and serves as a telling case for cross-cultural adaptation studies.
