In the 100 years history of Hollywood films, the western film in Oscar best pictures,as one type of film, lasted the longest time, was produced the most abundantly, and experienced the most changes. It is a type of film closely related to the history of American westward development.By falsifying the history of westward movement, shaping the image of western cowboys, constructing the myths with the dual narrative of“justice overcoming evil”,and creating the western mythological landscape, the western films hid the cruel historical truth, deified the westward movement of the United States, and built the westward movement led by the American government into a mythological epic of the American.Western films cater to Americans’romantic imagination and nationalist emotion about the west, and satisfy the audience’s psychological expectation and heroic dreams, thus creating a mythological reality that is more attractive, more widespread, and even more“real”in some sense than the real west itself in history.Western films have played or still play the important role in the process of Americans establishing their own national consciousness and national identity.
