Colonial Discourse Construction and the Evolving Sino-Indian Border Dispute:A Case Study on the British Empire's Encroachment on the Chinese Chayu Area

摘　　要：近代英国所建构的中印边界殖民话语是其蚕食中国藏南地区领土的重要借口。在察隅地区,英国从19世纪初期至1914年以非法调查和地图测绘为手段,以山地部族的历史归属及山地部族与藏人的边界位置为对象,逐步建构和发展了有利于其侵略扩张的中印边界殖民话语。与此同时,英国不断将中印边界线向中方一侧推移,最终于1914年提出了非法的“麦克马洪线”。它在察隅地区的走向,对此后的中印边界争端产生了重要影响。通过对近百年间英国蚕食中国察隅地区领土的历史过程的考察,可以驳斥英国和印度非法侵占我国藏南地区领土的所谓“证据”。To provide the rationale for its encroachment on China's Zangnan area(or the South Tibet),the British devised a colonial discourse on the Sino-Indian border dispute.Between the turn of the 19t Century and 1914,the British government carried out illegal geological survey and mapping in China's Chayu area.In this process,it gradually built a colonial discourse on the Sino-Indian border centered on the historical affiliation of the hill tribes and the historical border of Tibet.Such a discourse paved the way for the British encroachment and aggression along the Sino-Indian border.Due to these efforts by the British,the Sino-Indian border was increasingly moved northward,culminating in the announcement of the infamous"McMahon Line"in 1914.The trajectory of the"McMahon Line"along the Chayu part of the Sino-Indian border had profound implications on the Sino-Indian border dispute in later years.By revisiting the century-old history of the British's encroachment on the Chinese Chayu area,this article deconstructs the colonial discourse on Sino-Indian border devised by the British authorities and inherited by the Indian government after the latter's independence and delegitimizes the"proofs"based on which the Indian government llegally occupied the Chinese territory in the Zangnan area.
