摘　　要：赛普瑞安·艾克文西的长篇代表作《城市中的人们》和《贾古娃·娜娜》把尼日利亚旧都拉各斯描写成既是自由、平等和充满机遇的理想之地,又是物欲横流、道德沦丧的堕落之地,生动体现了作家对拉各斯爱恨交加的矛盾情感。两部小说的城市书写虽延续了欧洲城市小说中城乡对立的主题,但对乡村和宗教的救赎力量持保留态度。在作家眼中,城市里的人们追逐物欲和肉欲满足,在堕落中迷失了生活的方向,即使传统的乡村生活和来自西方的基督教也无法为他们提供救赎力量。艾氏对城市的矛盾情感反映了他对独立后尼日利亚何去何从的迷茫以及男性至上的性别歧视意识。This paper examines the image of the city Lagos in Cyprian Ekwensi’s best-known novels,People of the City and Jagua Nana.These two works depict Nigeria’s former metropolis Lagos both as a dreamland full of equality,freedom and opportunities,and as a corrupt place shorn of morality,which impressively reflects Ekwensi’s ambivalent love-hatred attitude toward the city.It is also pointed out that Ekwensi’s depiction of Lagos in the two novels extends the motif of city-country dichotomy prevalent in European city writings.However,different from European authors of city writings,Ekwensi is pessimistic about the redemptive power of the country and religion.In his view,people in the city have degenerated in the satiation of their desires for sex and material profits so much that neither the traditional country life nor the Western Christian belief can be their salvation.Ekwensi’s ambivalence in his urban narrative reveals his sexism,as well as his bewilderment about the future of the newly independent Nigeria.
