Objective To assess the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the mental health status of medical students. Methods A 90-item symptom self-assessment scale(SCL-90 scale)was applied to investigate the mental health status of first-to fifth-year clinical medical students from Weifang Medical University during the COVID-19 epidemic, and inter group comparisons were made. Results There was no difference in SCL-90 scale scores of medical students during the epidemic in terms of variables such as gender, grade and whether they were only children(P<0.05).In terms of grade, senior students in their fourth and fifth years tend to have higher scores compared to students in their first, second, and third years.Comparison of the mental health scores of medical students during the epidemic with those of the national norm showed that there were differences in the total SCL-90 scores(P<0.05),and in the seven factor scores of somatization,depression,anxiety,obsessive-compulsive,interpersonal sensitivity, hostility, and paranoia, and the scores during the epidemic were significantly higher than those during the enrollment period. Conclusion The COVID-19 epidemic has a certain impact on the mental health status of medical students.
