[Objectives]The effects of fresh feed rapeseed instead of carrots on breeding bulls were studied to solve the shortage of green feed for breeding bulls in winter.[Methods]20 Simmental and Charolais bulls were randomly divided into two groups for a 120 days experiment including the pre-feeding period and the feeding period.Group I and group II were fed the same basal diet daily, with an additional 2.5 kg of fresh rapeseed and 2.5 kg of fresh carrots added on this basis. The yield of fresh semen, the density of semen, and yield of frozen semen of each group at different periods were detected.[Results]The yield of fresh semen of group I and group II during the feeding period significantly increased by 34.83%and 54.50%compared to that during the pre-feeding period. The density of semen and yield of frozen semen in group I during the feeding period were higher than those in group II,but the difference was not significant.[Conclusions]Feed rapeseed can replace carrots and be added to the basic diet to increase the density and yield of semen in breeding bulls.
