In order to further investigate the nutritional requirements of elderly giant pandas,a study was conducted using the total fecal collection method in the Chongqing region from August 2017 to July 2018.This study aimed to assess the apparent digestibility of different nutritional components in bamboo, the primary food source for captive elderly giant pandas. The results revealed that when elderly giant pandas primarily consumed bamboo shoots, they exhibited good palatability, with a daily intake of dry matter at(1633.34±449.58)g.The apparent digestibility of crude protein, crude fat,and total energy was(70.80±4.66)%,(55.72±7.04)%and(52.33±3.65)%,respectively,which was higher compared to those consuming bamboo leaves as the primary food source, with crude protein, crude fat,and total energy digestibility at(52.86±6.53)%,(46.50±9.33)%and(46.16±4.48)%.Furthermore,when bamboo shoots were the primary food source, the digestibility of crude fiber was(21.64±4.52)%,which was lower than the apparent digestibility of crude fiber when bamboo leaves were the primary food source(32.32±3.35)%.Consequently,in the dietary management of elderly giant pandas, bamboo shoots as the primary food source are more beneficial for their digestion and absorption. On the other hand, for giant pandas entering the elderly stage, bamboo leaves as the main food source are more conducive to their overall health. These findings hold significant guidance for providing high-quality food resources for giant pandas.
