摘 要:威廉·萨默赛特·毛姆的小说中对于异域风景的描写蕴含着多面复杂的中国性建构。在《面纱》田园牧歌式的生活中,中国人是沉默的“失语者”;《在中国的屏风上》的东方乌托邦构想中,中国人又是勤劳的“单纯者”;而毛姆在《阿金》和《叶之震颤》中对异国风情向往的同时,却把中国人刻画成了边缘化的“他者”。毛姆在异域风景下对中国性的书写折射出了隐藏在其思想意识形态中的西方式傲慢以及对东方文化的偏见。重读毛姆的这些作品有助于了解作者中国形象建构背后的成因,以期实现不同地域、不同文明以及不同文化之间的平等交流。The description of exotic landscapes in William Somerset Maugham’s novels embodies a multifaceted and complex Chinese construction.In the pastoral life of The painted Veil,the Chinese are silent aphasiac;in the Oriental utopia conception of On a Chinese Screen,the Chinese are barbaric ignorant people;while in Ah King and The Trembling of a Leaf,Maugham represents his longing for exotic customs but portrays the Chinese as marginalized others.So Maugham’s writing on Chinese images in the exotic landscape reflects his western arrogance and prejudice to the eastern culture hidden behind in the ideology.Re-reading Maugham’s novels can help to understand the reasons for building Chinese image,so as to realize the equal communication between different regions,civilizations,and cultures.
