摘  要:Introduction On September 20,1924,archaeologists all over the world were taken by surprise by John Marshall’s identification of a civilization as old and great as that of Mesopotamia in the Indus Valley,at the time still part of the British Empire.1 Published in the Illustrated London News,Marshall’s article was the result of preliminary excavations by Daya Ram Sahni at Harappa in 1921 and by Rakhal Das Banerjee at Mohenjo-daro in 1922.
