Dunhuang has preserved a large number of plastic arts and written materials.Around the 4th century AD,the earliest Dunhuang murals has depicted the content related to Buddhist biographical stories. From the Buddhist biographical murals and manuscripts,we can explore the purposes of the preaching of rulers and religious figures,as well as the concerns of religious followers. The murals and manuscripts mainly drew inspiration from the Buddhist biographical stories that had been inherited through various means. The basis of the inheritance is the excerpts from the Buddhist scriptures. In the 9th-1Oth centuries, oral Buddhist biographical stories were gradually compiled into telling and singing texts. The murals, oral inheritance, and telling and singing literature are closely interconnected and have been spread in the process of mutual influence.
