Some young Chinese women are currently experiencing a transition from wearing makeup to going makeup-free. The study reveals that anti-makeup practice of these young women represents a cognitive reconstruction of gender practices, and they consider abandoning makeup as a micro-political claim to resist patriarchal control. During this process, they take a strategic and combinatorial approach to the use of media. The performance of going makeup-free among young Chinese women not only reflects a certain resistance to consumerism, but also demonstrates their pursuit of gender equality. However, their understanding of beauty is one-sided and functional. Media plays as infrastructure for these women's practice of anti-makeup, yet it also to some extent restricts the potential for "redoing gender".
