Ticks are bloodsucking ectoparasites that not only consume a large amount of blood and cause host damage, but also transmit various pathogens, seriously endangering human and animal health and affecting economic development.Different stage of life cycles of hard ticks are closely related to their blood meal, but little is known about relationships between hard ticks and the pathogens.During the blood meal, the physiology and biochemistry of hard ticks have undergone tremendous changes, including hemolysis, intracellular digestion, protein degradation and other processes. This process is also a critical period for the spread and proliferation of pathogens.Tick borne pathogens must adapt to the life cycle of hard ticks and physiological changes, before they were transmitted to new hosts when the hard tick sucks again. This paper focused on the physiological and biochemical processes of the midgut during the blood meal, elaborating the relationship between blood meal and hard tick life cycle, which benefit to the prevention and control of tick borne diseases.
