The vibrant culture of inscriptions that emerged in Taipei during the Ming and Qing Dynasties persisted even during the Japanese occupation period. These inscriptions served as a crucial means of preserving Chinese cultural traditions. However,as colonial rule deepened, the Japanese occupation authorities sought to transform the local inscription tradition. They forcefully promo⁃ted a colonial-oriented narrative framework for inscriptions and introduced new forms of inscriptions to assert control over public spaces. The transformation of Taipei’s inscriptions during the Japanese occupation period not only underscores the importance of the inscription tradition in the preservation of Chinese culture but also exemplifies the cultural rift between the colonizers and the colo⁃nized,as well as the divergent cultural paths they took.
