Virginia Woolf was unfortunately born between the two World Wars. The war becomes a central theme of her intellectual consciousness and literary output. Most of her important works were written during the peaceful interwar period between the 1920s and 1930s.Unlike mainstream war literature, they represented indirect war experiences from the home front through the eyes of civilians,in particular, women.Consequently, her writings revealed the lasting impact of war on individual daily life and mental world. In this regard,Woolf expanded the temporal and spatial scope of war writing,by breaking the dichotomy between wartime and peacetime, between the frontline and home, and between soldiers and civilians. Her contemplation of the nature of war further reflected original perspectives on war in stark contrast to mainstream national war discourses and contributed novel dimensions to the understanding of the two World Wars for future generations.
