African American author Jesmyn Ward provides a profound indictment of the racial issues surrounding Hurricane Katrina incident in her National Book Award-winning novel Salvage the Bones. The novel depicts the 12-day experience of a young African American girl,Esch, and her family in a coastal town in Mississippi before and after the hurricane, painting a narrative panorama of the“Black Anthropocene.”This article aims to explore, from a climate justice perspective coupled with the historical and policy backdrop of the United States, how Hurricane Katrina portrays the disposable environments of Southern African American families, the vulnerable bodies of African American women, and the companion animals of the African American community. The paper further elucidates the land dispossession and climate debt borne by African American families, the social stigma and loss of bodily rights faced by African American women, and the biological competitions endured by the African American community. In sum,Ward successfully breaks through the boundaries of race, gender, and species to pursue a better vision of handling interconnectedness among all species.
