Post-colonial affective study is a hot topic in contemporary Australian indigenous literature.Alexis Wright’s Carpentaria and Claire Coleman’s Terra Nullius are two narratives embedded in the historical context of European colonization depicting the consequences of traumatic aboriginal history.A view from the intersection of post colonial studies and affective literary studies considers these narratives not just as a challenge to the dominant Eurocentric views of white Australian official historiography, but also as a strategic utilization of negative emotions to foster social justice.Through representations of historical trauma, grief, and the topos of the vulnerable self, these narratives are expected to induce shame and guilt in their non-indigenous readers. These moral emotions are thought to be associated with greater empathy and to have constructive social and personal consequences.By placing in dialogue an apocalyptic novel and a piece of speculative post-apocalypse fiction written by two contemporary female Australian indigenous authors, this article attempts to make a case for perceiving traumatic grief in this particular context as a positive emotion which has the potential of fostering social justice. This perception stands in sharp contrast with the belief, prevalent in European and American contexts, that negative emotions are undesirable and inappropriate.
