摘　　要：After a two-year gap year following high school,I finally departed my hometown in Malaysia for a solo journey to China.Upon arrival,the most frequent question I encountered was:“Why do you Malaysians speak such fluent Mandarin?”Well,not only can we speak and write Mandarin,but many of us are also proficient in dialects such as Hakka,Cantonese,Hokkien,and Teochew.Our mastery of these dialects transcends mere convenience in communication;more importantly,it is about our strong desire to preserve the culture and language of our ancestral homeland:China.Indeed,as an ethnic Chinese person born and raised in Malaysia,my roots are forever tied to China.
