The stability of coalbed methane(CBM)well foams determines the effect of CBM development. In this study, ionic liquids(ILs)-based additives were introduced to improve the stability of surfactant foams. The effect of ILs was examined in a large number of foam experiments at room temperature. The foam properties of the surfactants(MX)were evaluated in the presence and absence of ILs at different mixing ratios. The results showed that imidazole-and eutectic-based ILs were able to improve surfactant foam stability at elevated temperatures to varying degrees, with the effect on foam stability being more pronounced at a surfactant/IL mixing ratio of 60:40.The highest foam stability increment for the best formulation amounted to 136%of the IL-free formulation. The results indicated that ionic liquids had a great potential to improve the stability of surfactant foam ability during coalbed methane development.
