Wang Baiyuan was a famous poet during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan,China. He had a relatively clear Asian consciousness. His view of Asia had both civilizational and revolutionary aspects:from a civilizational perspective,he exposed the materialism and utilitarianism of Western civilization;from a revolutionary perspective,he criticized the hegemonic behavior of Western empires. The awakening of Asia meant that Asian nations should achieve national self-determination through national movements, and change the hierarchical structure of Eastern and Western civilizations established by the West through modernization through cultural renaissance, restoring the cultural identity of Asia to break free from the shackles of Western civilization.Wang Baiyuan's view of Asia drew on the experiences of national revolutions in Asian countries such as China,India, and Turkey,as well as intellectual resources from both China and the West, such as Tagore,Gandhi,Sun Yat-sen,Okakura Tenshin,Romain Rolland, and Lenin.Based on dialogues with relevant thinkers,he rejected Hegel's Eurocentric world history view's bias against Asia and questioned and interrogated Japan's civilizational basis of Japan's"departing from Asia for Europe"movement. His criticism of Japanese modernization and colonialism was a fundamental difference between him and many Asianists in Japan.Through civilization and revolution,Wang Baiyuan ultimately wanted to build an Asia in which both nation and class were liberated.
