Solar thermal radiation-photovoltaic(TR-PV)conversion is a very promising photovoltaic(PV)power generation technology due to its flexible structure. The TR-PV converter converts energy from heat to electrons, then photons, and finally back to electrons, which leads to irreversible interconversion losses. For this reason,a new concept of solar thermionic ion-mediated thermal radiation photovoltaic(TRTI-PV)conversion is proposed, where thermionic photons as well as thermionic electrons are released and engaged between the TR and PV ends to minimize the irreversible losses of the electron-photon jumps. The results show that thermionic emission dominates the solar TRTI-PV conversion with mutual constraints between the TR and PV components.Although the output power of the TRTI-PV module is 1.67 W/cm^(2)and 3.63 W/cm^(2),the output power of the TRTI-PV converter rises to 35.54 W/cm^(2),drastically lower than that of the TR-PV,at thermal emission bandgap and photovoltaic bandgap of 0.3 eV and 0.2 eV,respectively. At a concentration ratio of 1000,the TRTI-PV converter′s solar conversion efficiency is about 34.78%,which is 3.24 times higher than that of a single TR-PV converter.
