The development of China s conventional oil reservoirs has gradually entered the late stage, with a slow decline in crude oil production.Consequently, the exploration and development of unconventional oil reservoirs such as shale oil, heavy oil,high-temperature,and high-salinity reservoirs have gained increasing attention. Thus, optimizing petroleum extraction techniques and enhancing the crude oil recovery rate remain research focal points.Chemical flooding is a significant method for the tertiary oil recovery, specifically for the extraction of residual and remaining oil in reservoirs that remains unrecovered after water flooding. In the context of enhanced oil recovery through chemical flooding, polymers have the advantages of low cost, multiple types, and are widely used. This article provides an overview of the fundamental theory of polymer flooding and the latest research achievements. It also summarizes the development trends of various high-temperature and high-salinity resistant polymers.Furthermore,it concludes their application effectiveness in the field and anticipates future research directions for polymer flooding in complex oil and gas reservoir conditions.
