Watching romantic series is one of the common media behaviors among contemporary young women. This paper, underpinned by in-depth interviews, focuses on the parasocial interaction and affective relationship construction among young women in China during the process of watching romantic series. The study has revealed that young women, regardless of their relationship states(single or partnered), engage in parasocial interactions and establish intimate bonds with media characters while watching romantic series. Through these interactions, they tend to satisfy their expectations, indulge in escapist fantasies, or seek emotional compensation. However, the path to emotional fulfillment for women is not always smooth. They may experience a sense of “disappointment” stemming from “relationship maintenance”, or a sense of “heartbreak” due to the “extensive relational outreach” of media characters. In addition, the parasocial behavior exhibited by watching romantic series indirectly reflects the social challenges faced by contemporary young women in China.
