With his production of Travesties, the distinguished contemporary British dramatist Tom Stoppard offers an effective and innovative rewriting and reconstruction of the late nineteenth-century playwright Oscar Wilde. The purpose of this paper is to explore how Stoppard successfully imitates Wilde’s artistic style through an in-depth analysis of the dramatic work,The Parody. In doing so,the paper will analyze the commonalities between the two,and how these commonalities contribute to the subtle resonance between the two and ultimately result in an effective artistic imitation.Through an in-depth study of this process,it will not only help us to have a clearer understanding of Wilde’s position in the history of English drama and his far-reaching influence, but also be able to deepen our understanding of the developmental lineage of the history of English drama. In addition,as the title of the play“Parody”implies,Stoppard, while parodying Wilde, also demonstrates a deeper social insight and artistic creativity, thus revealing the hidden social truth and the true meaning of art underneath the appearance of absurdity.
