摘　　要：林语堂在上海圣约翰大学时期发表的《我们为何学习中文》(1912)、《汉语拼音》(1913)、《中国小说》(1913)、《天国求经记》(1914)和《中国文学语言》(1914)等5篇语言文学研究的英文学术论文是其学术研究“学徒”时期的代表性作品,也是其一生致力于向西方介绍中国文化的起点。林语堂的“学者”身份在圣约翰大学时期初现雏形。Lin Yutang’s five English papers,Why We Study Chinese(1912),The Chinese Alphabet(1913),Chinese Fiction(1913),A Mission to Heaven(1914)and The Chinese Literary Language(1914),are the representative works in his apprenticeship in linguistic and literary researches at St.John’s University,which is also the starting point of his lifelong commitment to introducing Chinese culture to the West.Lin Yutang’s identity as a“scholar”began to take shape in the period of St.John’s University.
