The persistent interest in the representation of“post-blackness”in contemporary African American novels could be seen as a reaction against the traditional penchant for the representation of an essentialized“blackness”.“Post-blackness”literary representation is essentially driven by a move to reexamine contemporary black experiences, racial consciousness and black identity construction in fresh, ironic, and most importantly, pluralistic lens.Based on sample readings of representative texts that outline the way“post-blackness”is represented in myriad forms of artsgeneric borrowing and mixing, parodic rewriting of canonical texts by white writers as well as the utopian imagining of a“post-racial”future world, this paper argues that in its dramatization of identity, race, and history, contemporary representation of“post-blackness”shares a tradition that dates back to the writings of Ishmael Reed and culminates so far in the novels of Colson Whitehead and Paul Beatty.
