摘 要:纵观弗兰纳里·奥康纳的书信与散文,她对美国内战表现出含混与矛盾的情感,这在其唯一明确涉及内战的作品《临终遇敌》中尤为突出。评论界对该小说究竟隐含着奥康纳对内战的何种态度看法不一。基于此,本文梳理了《临终遇敌》中所刻画的南方社会形形色色的内战追忆活动,挖掘其所呈现的怪诞现实主义,如怪诞的文化特性、文体特征、物质—肉体形象与身体刻画,从而揭示追忆活动在消费主义文化语境中已然丧失其精神内核与文化价值,成为标榜身份与追忆旧日传统的“商品”与“道具”的境况,进而厘清奥康纳对“失败的事业”的态度,以及其对逝去的南方传统的怀念与敬意。Throughout her letters and essays,Flannery O'Connor shows ambiguous and contradictory feelings about the American Civil War,particularly in her only work that explicitly deals with the Civil War,“A Late Encounter with the Enemy”.Critics differ as to what O'Connor's views of the Civil War are implied in the short story.Thus,this paper aims to sort out the grotesque realism presented by various Civil War commemorations in the southern society depicted in“A Late Encounter with the Enemy”,focusing on the grotesque cultural characteristics,stylistic characteristics,material bodies and physical depictions,so as to reveal that those reminiscing activities have lost their spiritual core and cultural value in the context of consumerist culture,and have turned into“commodities”and“props”to flaunt identity and recall the old traditions.This paper further clarifies O'Connor's standpoints toward“The Lost Cause”,exploring her nostalgia and respect for Southern traditions.
