摘 要:美国当代重要的批评理论家、后殖民理论的奠基者爱德华·赛义德提出了东方主义理论,对后殖民时代西方语境下的“东方”进行了批判,认为东方主义的特性表现为敌视性和异域性。以朱丽·大塚的小说《阁楼里的佛》为例,探讨族群书写和东方主义之间的关系。大塚通过描绘二十世纪初日本“照片新娘”在美国的生活经历,展现了东方主义话语体系中亚裔的他者形象,并揭示了日裔美国人在“二战”前后的生存状态。小说细致刻画了亚裔女性在美国的边缘化和异化过程,反映了亚裔在欧美中心主义和文化霸权下的身份困惑和心理焦虑。受到东方主义的影响,亚裔为了融入西方社会而不自觉地进行自我“东方化”,这不仅促成了亚裔族群的同化,也为西方文化殖民提供了借口,反映了西方霸权的文化控制企图。Edward Said,an important contemporary American critical theorist and founder of postcolonial theory,puts forward the theory of Orientalism,which criticizes the“East”in the Western context in the postcolonial era,thinking that characteristics of Orientalism are manifested in xenophobic and the xenophilic.The relationship between ethnic writing and Orientalism is explored taking Julie Otsuka’s novel the Buddha in the Attic as an example.By depicting the life experiences of Japanese“photo brides”in the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century,Otsuka presents the image of the Asian Other in the Orientalism discourse and reveals the survival of Japanese Americans before and after World War II.The novel intricately depicts the marginalization and alienation of Asian women in the US,reflecting the identity confusion and psychological anxiety faced by Asians under Euro-American centrism and cultural hegemony.Influenced by Orientalism,Asians unconsciously undergo“self-Orientalization”in order to integrate into Western societies,which not only contributes to the assimilation of Asian communities,but also provides an excuse for Western cultural colonization,reflecting the Western hegemony’s attempts at cultural control.
