The origin of English travel literature cannot be traced to the Greek mythology and literature, because Greece is far away from Britain, and in medieval time there was nearly no social and cultural interactions between the two countries. The origin of English travel literature may be traced to Nordic European mythology and literature.Geographically speaking, the Nordic countries are nearest to Britain. From the eighth century to the twelfth century, the Scandinavians(or Vikings)continuously invaded Britain and made settlement there, and their mythology and literature exerted great influence on medieval English literature that was in the primitive period.Naturally, the travel narratives of Nordic European mythology and saga literature became the origin of medieval English travel literature.Poems The Seafarer,A Journey Charm and the epic Beowulf were the representative masterpieces of English travel literature in the medieval period.
