“Taoye Song”is recorded as a love ballad written by Wang Xianzhi,a calligrapher of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. The song describes the love details of the protagonist and the marriage form of aristocratic families at the time.Jinling Nanpu Ferry was named Taoye Ferry after the story of“Taoye Song”.Later literati often referred to“Taoye”as Taoye Ferry, adding a sense of farewell and longing to“Taoye”.During the Chen and Sui dynasties,“Taoye Song”was once used by contemporaries as a prophecy for Chen s demise.Thereafter, the works that reminisced about the past and lamented the rise and fall of Jinling landmarks such as Taoye Mountain were also referred to as“Taoye”.The reason why these three emotions can be integrated under the term“Taoye”is because they all have a direct association with the Jinling region, from the love between Wang Xianzhi and the talented beauty Taoye,to the sadness of departure in Taoye Ferry, and then to the lamentation of the rise and fall of Taoye Mountain. The classical allusion“Taoye”is seen in various literary genres due to its polysemy, and its former site has been preserved as part of Jinling culture.
