摘　　要：“Use a picture.It’s worth a thousand words.”-Arthur Brisbane,American Newspaper Editor(1864-1936)1 There is a common turn of phrase in English that,“One picture is worth a thousand words.”In attempting to identify the origin of this expression,it was surprising to uncover much confusion surrounding its first use in print.The first documented use of the similar phrase quoted above by Arthur Brisbane was found in a US newspaper in 1911.2 However,the actual phrase,“One picture is worth a thousand words,”proved to be very difficult to track down and includes a story of a British illustrator.
