During the 1960s and 1970s,intensifying industrial conflicts placed Britain in its most serious social disorder since the Second World War.Industrial relations became a focal point across society. The British press portrayed trade unions negatively from political, economic, and social perspectives, shaping unfavorable perceptions of them. These negative depictions resulted from several factors:trade unions'confrontational strategies provided fodder for criticism;the British elite's criticism influenced choices of media coverage;and editors'hostile sentiments led to negative portrayals of trade unions.Mass media not only express and concentrate interests but also transform claims of various interest groups into social consensus and policy games through their reporting processes. The construction of trade union images in the press prompted government efforts to strengthen labor relations governance and shaped public opinion attitudes toward trade unions.Media representations have become a significant force influencing the evolution of industrial relations. The press's tendency towards anti-union narratives also had adverse effects on industrial relations governance in Britain.
