Recent studies have suggested that gut microbiota can affect the mass and function of skeletal muscle, and proposed the theory of"gut-muscle axis".With the increasing aging of the world's population, sarcopenia is getting more and more attention and becoming one of the diseases that seriously damage the health of the elderlies.Clinical studies have found that the diversity of gut microbiota in sarcopenia reduced, with a significant decrease in beneficial bacteria and an increase in harmful bacteria.Regulating gut microbiota can improve the mass and function of skeletal muscle in sarcopenia. The metabolites of gut microbiota, such as amino acids, lipopolysaccharides and short-chain fatty acids, have regulatory effects on skeletal muscle protein metabolism, and regulate skeletal muscle protein synthesis and catabolism through various pathways. Therefore, this paper reviews the changes in the gut microbiota in sarcopenia and the regulatory role of its metabolites on skeletal muscle protein metabolism,in order to provide new strategies for the clinical treatment of sarcopenia.
