The development of human society has resulted heavy metal content in soil and sediment far exceeds background values, posing serious potential threats and hidden dangers. However, with the profound impact of heavy metal mobility, toxicity, and bioaccumulation on the environment,it is a significant segment that speciation analysis to environmental research. At present, the most representative approaches are the Tessier method and the BCR three-step method. This provides effective solutions for issues such as reference material development, heavy metal pollution assessment, ecological restoration, and bioavailability risk judgement, but still possesses respective limitations. In order to provide ideas and support for research on soil and sediment heavy metal pollution, the commonly used elemental morphology extraction and analysis methods were summarized and the potential problems and development directions of heavy metal speciation analysis methods in the future were systematically compared and discussed in this article.
