The Ryukyu Kingdom threatened by Japan in the early 17th century concealed the truth from the Ming Dynasty as the suzerain and embellished the portraits of Satsuma Domain and Tokugawa shogunate. In response to the crisis posed by the Japanese invasion of the Ryukyu Kingdom, the Ming Dynasty changed its stance towards Ryukyu and instructed the Ryukyu kingdom to suspend tributum for ten years.Meanwhile, the Tokugawa Shogunate sought to utilize the Ryukyu Kingdom as the intermediar to reestablish Sino-japanese tributary trade, while the Satsuma Domain initially aimed to annex the Ryukyu Kingdom but adjusted its strategy towards the Ryukyu Kingdom under the diplomatic policy of the Tokugawa Shogunate and covertly intervened in China-Ryukyu tributary trade to reap benefits. The shifts of Ryukyu diplomatic strategy and the changes in strategy of the Ming Dynasty and Japan regarding the post-invasion Ryukyu Kingdom reflect the internal and external conflicts and balance of the political forces, which indicates the changes in international and regional situation in East Asia in the early 17th century.
