Rural sociology in America is built on the land-grant universities system, while agricultural sociology is deeply embedded within the disciplinary context of rural sociology. This paper aims to re-examine the rise and development of agricultural sociology in America by analyzing its disciplinary history, with a focus on land-grant universities as a starting point.Initially, rural sociology emerged from the agricultural public practice conducted by land-grant universities. However, over time,it deviated from its original intention due to institutional dependence. In response to the disciplinary crisis, agricultural sociology came into being in the late 1970s,using“sociological imagination”to reconnect practical issues and knowledge production. It is evident that“publicity”has always been a key driving force in the development of rural sociology, including agricultural sociology.Facing the challenges of the new era, this paper argues that returning to rural“communities”with a fresh perspective and cultivating public consciousness could be a potential way forward for advancing American agricultural sociology. The discipline construction of agricultural sociology in China should also inherit this academic tradition and explore organic public sociology.
