During the time of the Yin Ruins, the setting and construction of tomb tunnels changed twice. The first change occurred between the first phase and the second phase of the Yin Ruins. In the first phase of the Yin Ruins, tomb tunnels appeared in mausoleums. But,the tomb chambers and tunnels were small in scale, and there was no practice of building four tomb tunnels. In the second phase of the Yin Ruins, the mausoleums significantly grew in size, and began to have four tomb tunnels.Meanwhile, the practice of building tomb tunnels spread to tombs of the nobles discovered at Hougang Site. The second change took place between the second phase and the third phase of the Yin Ruins. After the expanding of the tomb tunnels in the second phase to the third phase of the Yin Ruins and beyond, tomb tunnels were built in other zones of the Yin Ruins and in tombs of the nobles outside the Yin Ruins.Four tomb tunnels also appeared in a small number of tombs of the nobles, but were comparatively smaller in scale.Such an institution of burials persisted in the Western Zhou. The large tomb with four tomb tunnels discovered at Zhougongmiao Site is comparatively minor in scale, and the tomb occupant is in fact not the king of Zhou.
