Ischemic stroke has always been one of the major diseases threatening human health, which has the characteristics of complex pathogenesis, high morbidity, high disability rate and high mortality rate.Total flavone of hawthorn leaves(TFHL)is the most effective active ingredient in Chinese herbal medicine hawthorn leaves, and it has obvious effect in the treatment of ischemic stroke. At present, great progress has been made in studying the mechanism of TFHL against cerebral ischemia, but due to the complexity of its mechanism, further research is needed. Therefore, this article systematically reviews the anti-ischemic effects of TFHL from five aspects:reducing cell apoptosis, antioxidant stress, alleviating inflammatory response, alleviating calcium overload, and reducing nitric oxide neurotoxicity.Furthermore, this article summarizes the signaling pathways and related drugs,in order to further clarify the mechanism of TFHL's anti ischemic effect and provide theoretical basis and reference for further development and utilization of TFHL.
