英语专业的出路:调整专业名称——从语言工具到学科专业

摘　　要：英语专业一直面临毕业生就业困难、专业不断被撤销的危机。本文认为,英语专业危机主要是定位问题。体现在两个方面:首先,专业缺少系统的学科体系支撑,大部分高校英语专业的学分放在语言基础课程上,主要掌握一门语言技能或工具,而专业语言学和文学学科课程是基础知识性的;其次,不符合或不能满足社会需求,这与外语界过度强调人文精神和自由无用、批评语言的工具性、排斥复合型英语人才培养有关。我们认为英语专业已失去了赖以存在的两个基本条件,到了取消英语专业说法,改变以语种命名专业,用学科命名专业的时候。根据学科专业的需求,应该主要发展“外语+其他专业”的复合型人才和专门用途英语的语言复合型人才,从一个语种命名专业转换为学科命名专业,凤凰涅槃。English major is suffering a grave crisis.Its undergraduate students could not find job upon graduation and many universities and colleges have been forced to close their English majors.The paper analyzes the causes for the crisis and believes that the problem is the major's wrong orientation.First,the major lacks the support of a particular discipline such as linguistics or literature and most of the courses aim to improve students language proficiency.Second,the major could not meet the socio-economic needs as it is supposed to train people with humanism and needn t consider social needs.The paper suggests that English major has lost its basis as a speciality and it is time to change the name of the major from English language to disciplines such as linguistics,literature,business English,legal English and English for specific purposes.English major will be reincarnated from the change of a language major to a disciplinary major.
