The western section of the early Maritime Silk Road refers to the Indian Ocean trade route from India to the Roman provinces of Egypt. It was the primary channel for trade and cultural exchanges between Rome and India.Through the Maritime Silk Road, pottery, glass, bronze, and other artifacts from the Roman Empire were imported into various parts of the Indian Peninsula as commodities, profoundly influencing the craftsmanship and style of local Indian artifacts. The artifacts unearthed from the 1st to 3rd centuries on the Indian Peninsula include both Roman artifacts and local Indian artifacts, which reflect certain Roman cultural characteristics. Therefore, the artifacts on the Indian Peninsula were not only cultural heritage preserved through the interaction between India and Rome through the Maritime Silk Road civilization, but also witnessed the mutual learning between the two civilizations. This article takes the remains of pottery, bronze ware, and glassware discovered in Gujarat,Kolhapur, and Arikamedu on the Indian Peninsula as examples to analyze their sources and the characteristics of the integration of Indian and Roman cultures, and to explore the expression of Roman artifact craftsmanship in Indian culture.
