As one of the two tales told by the fictional Chaucer the pilgrim in The Canterbury Tales,"The Tale of Melibee"is writen as an allegorical narrative featuring main characters as personified virtues and vices. The assignment of this genre to the tale told by the narrator of the poet's own name deserves more critical attention. This article examines allegorical interpretation and personifications in"The Tale of Melibee".Its purpose is threefold:first,it aims to detect anti-allegorical elements embedded within the tale to subvert the totalizing interpretative system;second,it categorizes the tale as a combination of moral allegory and political allegory to address the critical controversy whether"The Tale of Melibee"is a satire against Richard II and his courtiers;third, based on the previous two points,it reassesses Chaucer the poet's idea of authorship and his ways of creating the discursive space of ideological freedom for literature.
