Based on the emerging petroculture studies in Euro-American aca-demia in recent years, this article reads John Updike's classic Rabbit Is Rich as a typical case of petroleum literature.Through the three dimensions of temporal economy, spatial transfer, and metaphor of the self,it analyzes the way in which the novel reveals the trends of financial speculation,a political rightward turn, and narcissistic culture in the U.S.that were driven by the 1979 oil crisis. Moreover, the article demonstrates the paradox that while oil gives rise to such transformations, its own political and ecological significance is inadver-tently undermined by them. The seeming contradiction between presence and absence typical-ly characterizes petroleum literature and provides a paradigmatic inspiration for its study.
