Letters Written During a Short Residence in Sweden,Norway, and Denmark is the last well-known work of Mary Wollstonecraft,a travel book cast in the form of letters, set against the French Revolution.Focusing on her concerns with the lower class and the prospect of plebian politics, this paper analyzes the dilemma of negotiating objectivity in this text from three aspects, the experiences of space, the communication of emotion and the remodeling of linear history. It is intended to reveal how the text has been reconciliating personal experience, the anxiety of social reform and the ethics of being objective, under multiple pressures. The narrative conflicts embody more than individual dilemma of writing, but the predicaments of wider radical supporters in Britain. They stuck between the aspiration for plebian involvement in social reform and the fear of possible social disorder. This investigation of objectivity can shed light on the evolving attitude towards fact and justice in the social transformation of 18th century Britain,as well as the narrative ethics in non-fiction.
