Aging of population is one of the social challenges faced by the globe as a whole.Margaret Atwood portrays the predicaments and breakthroughs of the elderly in her novel The Heart Goes Last from a unique perspective. The elderly tend to be“Otherized”due to high cost of aging and lack of future value. The author experimentally reasserts the subject meaning of the elderly with the representation of sexual vitality and the affirmation of their life value to subvert the narrative bias imposed by society. In addition to reconstructing the meaning of their existence, some of them have broken the gerontological narrative foreclosure to reaffirm the“narrative capital”and value of the elderly. In the interpretation of the gerontological narrative in the novel, the author advocates to concentrate on the identity construction and narrative discourse of the elderly,It overturned the rigid identity barrier and the cognitive prejudice of the aging process by the identity construction and narrative discourse of the elderly.
