Potassium,an essential macro mineral,is vital for cellular homeostasis, metabolism and numerous physiological functions in livestock and poultry. Most metabolic processes are relied on or influenced by potassi-um,and the physiological functions of potassium include regulates intracellular and extracellular fluid balance, osmotic pressure,acid-base balance of body fluids, neuromuscular excitability, energy metabolism, prevents cellular over-swelling and acts as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions. With the intensification of livestock produc-tion,the demand for potassium escalates.Though feeds are typically rich in potassium, making deficiency rare and its physiological roles less studied, this article synthesizes the absorption, metabolism and homeostatic mechanisms of potassium in these animals, alongside its applications in livestock production. The aim is to in-form the judicious use of potassium, enhance production performance and foster high-quality development in the livestock industry.
