Things Fall Apart,a novel of Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe, explores how colonialism alters the traditional social landscape and personal identity of the Igbo people through the relationship between space and memory, revealing the complexity and tragedy of cultural conflicts.Umuofia represents the original way of life and social organization of the Igbo, carrying personal and collective memories;the evil forest becomes the place where traditional beliefs collide with foreign religions;new institutions such as churches, courts, and governments gradually erode and replace the existing social structures. The younger generation is more receptive to new cultures, while the older generation insists on tradition, which leads to generational conflicts and social fragmentation.Okonkwo attempts to restore traditional order by destroying the church, but is ultimately arrested by the colonizers and commits suicide. His tragedy symbolizes the disintegration and loss of traditional society under colonial oppression.
