In recent years, metabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease have become prevalent, posing a serious challenge to public health.Researchers have gradually recognized the importance of the gut microbiota,as disruptions in its structure and function are closely linked to the development of these diseases.Studies have found that some bioactive components of traditional Chinese herbs, such as polyphenols and saponins, which have the characteristics of“medicinal and edible homology”,can improve the structure and function of the gut microbiota, regulate metabolic processes, and exert therapeutic effects. These medicinal and edible homologous Chinese herbs show great potential in the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases. The article summarized the principles and methods of using extracts from medicinal and edible homologous Chinese herbs to regulate the gut microbiota for the treatment and prevention of metabolic diseases, providing references for dietary intervention in metabolic diseases and the development of functional foods.
