In Milan, public housing(known as Edilizia Residenziale Pubblica,or ERP)constructed between the 1920s and 1970s has long been integral to the city's fabric.Whether addressing the housing needs of economically disadvantaged families or accommodating new family units, these public housing developments are emblematic of the intersection between social policy and architectural innovation. They serve as a testament to a specific era in Milan's history, where housing not only met societal demands but also refected a deep concern for humanistic values in design. However, amidst the urban evolution, these residences have inevitably faced challenges of deterioration. In response, the City of Milan has devised a series of renovation strategies aimed at revitalizing these public dwellings, transforming them into cultural landmarks within the city while ensuring their continued function as essential housing. This article aims to explore the historical context of public housing in Milan and examine the innovative regeneration strategies employed, offering insights and inspiration for similar endeavors elsewhere.
