摘　　要：2004年11月17日,马里兰大学孔子学院在美国成立,是美国首家孔子学院。根据中国教育部汉语国际推广领导小组办公室、马里兰大学及其姐妹大学南开大学的联合倡议,该孔院旨在开展中文语言项目,提供中国研究信息,培养对当代中国文化和社会的兴趣。成立至今,该孔院在这两所合作大学的大力支持下,一直致力于实现其目标和宗旨。Established on November 17,2004,the Confucius Institute at the University of Maryland(CIM)was the first of its kind in the United States.As a joint initiative between the Chinese Ministry of Education's Office of Chinese Language Council International,the University of Maryland,and its sister university Nankai University,the CIM aimed to develop Chinese language programs abroad,provide information about Chinese studies,and cultivate interest in contemporary Chinese culture and society.
