Chen Shen,a well-known scholar of the mid-to-late Ming dynasty, compiled and published numerous books. There are four extant works attributed to Chen Shen concerning The Rites of Zhou. This article systematically examines the authenticity and textual origins of these works, exploring the characteristics of Chen Shen’s scholarship on The Rites of Zhou.Although Zhouli Xunjun was compiled by Chen Shen, its content is largely based on a simplified version of He Qiaoxin’s Zhouli Jizhu, with Chen’s annotations being relatively superficial. However, his argument that“The Rites of Zhou is not incomplete”had a significant impact.Zhouli Jiegu is another reading of The Rites of Zhou compiled by Chen Shen. This work breaks down the sequence of official titles, and the scholars of the Siku Quanshu editorial team claim that it was based on Wang Yingdian’s edition of The Zhouli Zhuan, which is not entirely accurate. The edition of Chen Shen’s annotated Rites of Zhou housed in East China Normal University is Zhouli Xunzhu, which is an abridged version derived from Zhouli Xunjuan. It is a forgery by booksellers, instead of a separate work by Chen Shen.Another edition of Rites of Zhou annotated by Chen Shen and published by Ling Duruo is also a repackaged version of Zhouli Xunjun. The contents of Zhouli Xunjun,Zhouli Xunzhu, and the Ling-published edition can all be traced back to He Qiaoxin’s Zhouli Jizhu. The content of these works is progressively simplified, indicating that the series of works on The Rites of Zhou under the name of Chen Shen served as an important medium for the dissemination and popularization of Zhouli Jizhu.
