On January 15, 1955, Mao Zedong and other Chinese leaders made a major decision to develop nuclear weapons. Their previous thinking on nuclear weapons began shortly after the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, by the U.S. Air force in August 1945 and lasted for ten years. Their thought and discourse during the ten years was both unique and rich, including the role of nuclear weapons in different types of wars, the impact of nuclear weapons in world politics, especially on major international affairs of the day, the relationship of nuclear weapons to China's national security and the modernization of its military force, and the relationship to China's position in the world. Many of these thinking and discourses have clear continuity and since then have had a lasting impact on China's nuclear strategy.
